Andrew H. Metz

Andrew Metz’s professional experiences began as a chemist at the National Marine Fisheries Service Laboratory, in which he served as a research assistant to a Ph.D. in food technology. Thereafter, he was employed at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office as a patent examiner and was later promoted to Supervisory Primary Examiner. He later served as an Administrative Patent Judge for the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences for over 15 years. During his tenure, Andy decided numerous appeals and conducted numerous interference proceedings involving pharmaceutical compositions and biotechnology. He returned in 2012 to the Patent Trial and Appeals Board to assist with developing procedures, and to render decisions. Andy’s technical expertise also includes lubricant compositions, fuel compositions, catalysts and catalytic processes, petrochemistry, refining processes, carbohydrates, and cleaning methods.
